Sleep paralysis is a phenomenon in which people briefly experience episodes of complete paralysis during sleep. These episodes generally last for a few seconds and can vary in severity. They are usually accompanied by a feeling of terror, but can also include hallucinations or the feeling that one is being watched.
There is still much we do not know about sleep paralysis, but some research suggests that it may be linked to anxiety, depression, and other psychiatric disorders. It is also possible that sleep paralysis is a result of an abnormal interaction between REM and non-REM sleep. Currently, there is no cure for sleep paralysis, but treatments include relaxation techniques and cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT).
