The idea of America First is linked to an internationalist policy originally championed by President Woodrow Wilson. There isn’t really a high-level explanation of what it means, but in general, it involves nationalism and non-interventionism.
The isolationist movement gained traction in the 20s and 30s. The America First Committee wanted to avoid U.S. intervention in WW2, arguing that the rest of the world would find a way to sort out their problems without U.S involvement.
Donald Trump’s 2016 presidential campaign slogan was used to emphasize America’s withdrawal from international treaties and organizations. The phrase became an official foreign policy doctrine during his presidency (2017-2021).
The slogan has been interpreted as meaning that the United States should not take part in international trade agreements and that it should withdraw from military alliances such as NATO.
